Home Lines' ex Homeric now sailing for Marella Cruises as the Marella Dream has been removed from Service, - Pictured Home Lines Homeric.

Today Marella Cruises announced the early retirement of their ship - the Marella Dream. Although you may say that this has no ties to New York cruising - it most certainly does.

The Marella Dream was originally built as Home Line's Homeric of 1986. Construction of the cruise ship was done at the Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg Germany. The Homeric was the replacement for Home Line's famous Oceanic (which was a sad day in Home Lines history).

The Homeric quickly became a favorite on the New York to Bermuda cruise scene being able to dock directly on Front Street in Hamilton, Bermuda right in the center of all the action. Under Home Lines ownership, the Homeric provided passengers with an upscale cruise experience, with great food and entertainment on a modern cruise vessel.

Homeric is very special – in many ways. As the very first cruise ship built by MEYER WERFT, it marks our grand arrival in the world of cutting-edge shipbuilding. The ship was constructed in the open – the covered docks in Papenburg were only built later on. Homeric was also the first and last vessel of its size to be launched sideways. There was a carnival atmosphere around the shipyard as the ship’s hull slipped sideways into the water, unleashing a gigantic wave. The ship was delivered to Home Lines in 1986 after two years of construction.

Homeric was renamed “Westerdam” in 1988 and returned to MEYER WERFT to be upgraded in 1989. The ship was to be extended by 40 metres to create more space for cabins, restaurants and sports facilities. Our shipyard specialists achieved this by splitting the vessel in two and adding more blocks in the middle. Never before had such extensive redevelopment work been carried out on a cruise ship of that size, which presented MEYER WERFT with a huge challenge.

Following the redevelopment work, Westerdam left the shipyard in Papenburg with a length of 244 meters and a visibly stretched design. The extended Westerdam now featured a two-storey show lounge with seating for over 700 guests. A sliding glass roof was installed in the pool area, where passengers could relax outdoors in good weather.

After completing her tenure with Holland America, the Westerdam sailed for Costa Cruises in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe as the Costa Europa. Costa Cruises chartered the Costa Europa to TUI under the name Thomson Dream and later when TUI re-branded the cruise line Marella Cruises, as the Marella Dream.

Marella Cruises Marella Dream has been removed from the Marella Cruises fleet - Pictured Marella Dream.

It has not been revealed whether there is a potential buyer for the Marella Dream or if the ship will be sold to ship scrappers due to her age of 34 and lack of balcony staterooms.
