Why Are Airfares So Expensive?

1-25-2015 - I just read an interesting article that stated there are currently only 11 airlines still operating. With all of the consolidation - all of the competition has been virtually eliminated.

The airlines have been intentionally limiting capacity causing the flights to fly full and forcing passengers to pay high fares. Under the old model, ariline competed with each other and with the existence of many airlines, the capacity normally exceeded demand which resulted in discounting. Now airfares are out of control.

Cruises departing from your nearest cruise port is a better option and the airfare can be applied to your cruise fare.

Just incase you are curious - here are the 11 remaining domestic airlines:
  • Delta
  • United
  • American
  • Southwest
  • Alaska Airlines
  • Allegiant
  • Frontier
  • Hawaiian
  • JetBlue
  • Spirit
  • Virgin America
